Saskatoon Berry Pie Recipe

If you've never had Saskatoon berry pie before, you're in for a treat. A dessert made with this unconventional berry is a sweet and delicious delight—the best berry pie we can think of. So, what is the famous Saskatoon berry? Used by the Indigenous people of Canada for years as a source of food and energy, the fruit has become a part of our nation's tradition and history. A purple-y violet colour, the fruits are sweet and juicy with a touch of a nutty flavour. They're also good for you! They're full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants—boasting more calcium, manganese and iron than that of the blueberry. Native to western Canada, it's fitting that the City of Saskatoon draws its name from this berry.

This delectable dessert has been featured in songs and stories and is a favourite with kids and adults all over the country. They can be found in the wild, but we suggest sourcing your Saskatoon berries from a farm or market to ensure you're using the right fruits - many wild berries look very similar, and some may not be suitable for consumption.

How to Make a Saskatoon Berry Pie

Specialty bakeries or farmers' markets will often feature freshly baked Saskatoon berry pies, but we think it's much more fun to make our own. After all, what screams summer more than a freshly baked pie cooling in the breeze, made with fresh, seasonal, and local fruit?

While it won't yield an authentic Saskatoon berry pie, if you're having trouble finding Saskatoon berries in your area, you can substitute them with other fresh berries in this recipe. Check out the berry section at your nearest grocery store to make a still-delicious filling of your choice. A pie of any kind will be warmly received by its lucky recipients.

Our directions are simple and easy, even for novice pie makers. You may even wonder why you've ever bought ready-made pie filling after trying out ours! This recipe works well with any pie crust, so feel free to use your go-to pie crust recipe. For first-time pie bakers, a good pie crust can be tricky to make, so we recommend a store-bought premade or frozen option to save time without sacrificing any of the flavour.
